Shelly, known by her Kwakiutl name Yasakw and Haida name Guudangaay Tlaatsgaa Jaad (Strong Minded Woman), is a dedicated artist and social work graduate who comes from a rich cultural heritage. A proud member of the Haida matrilineal society, she descends from a long line of Yakgujanaas Raven Clan women, with additional Haida clans including Three Fin Killer Whale and Dogfish. On her father’s side, she belongs to the Kwakwaka’wakw nation, with Thunderbird, Double Headed Sisiutl, and Grizzly Bear clans. Currently living on Haida Gwaii with her fiancé and two children, Yasakw practices formline art daily and continues to explore new creative expressions rooted in her deep ancestral traditions.
